In the most run-down neighbourhoods, amidst broken neon signs, cigarette smoke and cinemas open all night, grindhouse cinema was born: a wild, cheap and excessive cinematic universe where the rules of good taste were practically non-existent. These films, screened in the old grindhouse cinemas, sought to shock the audience with extreme violence, raw horror, chases, blood, crime and characters pushed to the limit.
Shot on shoestring budgets but with immense creativity, they developed a gritty, chaotic aesthetic that ultimately became their defining feature. Grindhouse blended horror, action, exploitation and B-movies into direct, aggressive stories which, over time, became true cult classics. Films such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Dawn of the Dead left their mark on entire generations and redefined independent and underground cinema.
Decades later, Zona 00 Comics will revive that spirit with Grindhouse, bringing the chaos, violence and grungy aesthetic of those late-night screenings to the comic strip. More than a genre, grindhouse is an attitude: provocative and imperfect comics, made to shake up the reader and turn excess into spectacle.
